Trimestre Montréal: wordmark over the Montréal skyline at night, with “Invest for the future” and “Invest now” stickers

The 1st hackathon · Trimestre Q4

Build your own investing stack.

Finance has never had more data, and AI finally makes it usable. Yet every screen still shows the same five ratios. Build what’s missing, on Onesheet data.

-- 001. The investing world is static

  1. 01/03

    More data than ever.

Filings, earnings calls, sector KPIs: the information is out there. Most tools show only a fraction of it.

  2. 02/03

    AI is redefining the job.

Quant research, portfolio construction, fundamental analysis: the next generation of finance builds its own tools instead of settling for someone else’s.

  3. 03/03

    Tailored wins.

Legacy platforms serve everyone the same way. A hedge fund, a self-directed investor and a thematic index don’t need the same thing.

-- 002. The challenge

One idea. One thesis. One evening.

There’s no shortage of stock pitch competitions. Trimestre is where you build what comes before the pitch: the tool, or the stack, that makes the research possible in the first place.

Teams get a short list of sectors and stocks, along with the data, and have one evening to build a custom tool that turns that data into an edge.

For example
  1. 01In a crowded, fragmented market: a tool that finds and shows the strategy a small player could use to grow fast and take market share.
  2. 02A tool built for a single stock, then used to back the team’s pitch.
  3. 03An advanced benchmark that shows what competitors are actually doing, beyond the usual ratios, for a public company, a private company or a private equity firm that wants to compare itself with its competition.
Sectors and stocks
A short list, revealed on the spot at the Nov 12 kickoff.
Onesheet data
  1. 01Complete, ultra-specific data on every company and sector in play
  2. 02Far beyond fundamentals: the metrics specific to each sector, every number with its source
  3. 03Daily prices, as CSV and via API

Details go out to registrants on Nov 9. You spend the evening building, not hunting for data.

Who takes part
Quant and fundamental analysts, developers, finance, engineering and computer science students, self-directed investors. Teams mix finance and code.

-- 006. FAQ

01Do I need a team?

No. Come with a team of 2–4, or come solo and we’ll match you at kickoff so every team mixes finance and code.

02Do I need to code?

No. Every team needs someone who understands investing as much as someone who writes code.

03What data do we get?

Onesheet data: complete, ultra-specific data on every company and sector in play, far beyond fundamentals, plus daily prices. Details go out on Nov 9.

04Which sectors and stocks?

A short list, revealed on the spot at the Nov 12 kickoff.

05Can we keep building after Nov 12?

Yes, if you make the final. The 3 finalists have until Nov 19 to improve their tool, as long as the team and the core idea stay the same.

06How is the winner chosen?

The Nov 12 demo decides the 3 finalists. The final score is 80% for the tool and video submitted on Nov 19, and 20% for a working MVP on the night of Nov 12.

07Who owns what I build?

You do.

08Is it really free?

Yes, dinner and drinks included. The 3 finalist teams also get free tickets to the Nov 24 final at Espace CDPQ.

09What language is it in?

French and English. Present in whichever you prefer.
